The digital public sphere was the theme of the year 2020. Workshops took place in Kyoto, Japan, and in Munich, Germany. The products presented below were invented and designed in the course of the deliberative workshop series Design X Discourse. Each product was designed by a workshop group and embedded in a different speculative future scenario.

The report summarizes all workshops and speculative design artifacts.

The report gives an overview of the developed framework, the workshop process and introduces all workshop outcomes that were created in 2020. The workshops focused on the digital public sphere and digitalized living spaces in general – but the framework can also be applied to alternative topics.

The report also includes interviews with two design experts who present their perspective.

HOW SHOULD THE RESULTS BE APPROACHED?

Please note, the following products are design artifacts created by applying the tool of speculative design. Speculative design artifacts are meant to challenge a status quo and, therefore, sometimes irritate the observer in order to stimulate critical thought processes. These design artifacts are not to be understood as perfect futuristic solutions to specific problems, but rather to be perceived as contributions to discussions about the respective issue of interest.
